Zbyhoň. Trial print of an illustration for The Manuscript of Dvůr Králové
After returning from his studies in Munich, Mánes went on study trips to the Czech countryside and Slovakia, where he drew on figural and ornamental motifs to depict the ideal Czech (Slavic) national type. He was inspired by the idea that ancient customs and realities still survived among the rural people and could be authentically captured. The result was a combination of the ideal of a long-gone golden age, of the slender Czech-Slav, with the expressive features of folk, rural immediacy and “national attributes”, partly taken from the Slovak realities of the time.
