Austria as it is
Carl Postl, a former student at the University of Prague and later a member of the Order of the Crusaders of the Red Star, fled to America in 1823, where he led the life of a traveller, adventurer, journalist and writer. Under the pseudonym Charles Sealsfield he published the political travelogue Austria as it is in London. He used the work to denounce the political and social conditions prevailing in the Austrian monarchy during the reign of Emperor Francis I and Chancellor Metternich, which he condemned for its censorship, restrictions on liberty, and the widespread fear it incited of the secret police.
