By testifying about artistic and social themes, the artist placed his work into a richer, both intellectual and biographical context. In this way, he offered a glimpse into his life and revealed his own perception of the world. Some, in particular, are renowned as much for their letters and aphorisms as for their art. Otokar Březina, often regarded as a prophetic thinker, or Oscar Wilde, famous for his witty comments, attracted admirers who documented their sentences and longer reflections. Březina also engaged in extensive correspondence, while Wilde’s work and life are illuminated by a poignant letter-essay he penned in prison, reflecting on his journey thus far and reassessing his dandy lifestyle.
