Paradise Lost, translated from English to Czech by Josef Jungmann
Jungmann supplemented his translation of this spiritual epic that tells of the fall of angels and the first human beings with a list of “opaque words”. His aim was to clarify words that might be difficult for the contemporary reader. Jungmann, for whom the vocabulary of Czech at that time was insufficient for his translation purposes, created neologisms by borrowing from other Slavic languages or reviving words from Old Czech that had become obsolete. His list included the words vděk (gratitude), touha (desire), hrad (castle), hnusný (disgusting), dav (crowd), střed (centre), přelud (delusion), rozpačitý (embarrassed), obrovský (gigantic)...
