Letter from the Editorial Circle of Tvář magazine to the Central Committee of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers from 18 Jan. 1968
Tvář [Face], a monthly for art and social criticism was established in 1964. The disputes that followed with its publisher, the Union of Czechoslovak Writers, as well as in the ideological department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, lasted the entire run of the magazine (1964-1965 and 1968-1969) and had to do both with the content and with the magazine's very existence. The open conflict of the editorial circle with the ‘powers that be’ precipitated the suspension of Tvář. Initiatives and petitions created in support of its revival were supported by many cultural figures.
